Afterglow

January 3, 2008

Today was cold, very cold, but sunny, which left behind a wonderful sunset at the end of the day. Fate was with me as I ordinarily do not head home along the lake, but detoured to do so today because I had fallen behind a very slow vehicle on my regular route. Even though the road runs along the lakeshore, there are only a few places where you can actually see the lake and with several inches of new snow, even fewer places that you can access the lake. As I passed the drive into Claybanks Township Park, the most incredible orange and yellow sky, punctuated by a huge orange ball hanging just above Lake Michigan, was visible through the trees. Notice I said this was my view once I had actually *passed* the drive into the park. It was nearly 2 miles up the road before I found a suitably cleared drive in which to turn myself around and by the time I made my way back to the park and carefully maneuvered the two-track through the snow to the lake, the sun had slipped into the water, leaving behind a fiery sky as the only evidence that it had been there. A disappointment for sure, but still a beautiful sight.
